History of Mallappally Block Panchayat

Mallappally was initially a part of Thiruvalla taluk in Alappuzha district. After the formation of Pathanamthitta district in 1982, Mallappally taluk was formed by separating 8 villages of Thiruvalla taluk as per the government order dated 9 June 1983. Mallappally block panchayat was established with the aim of local development centred around these taluk boundaries. Mallappally block is an area with an ancient historical and cultural tradition. It is believed that the place name Mallappally is derived from the village of Mallans. This area, which is naturally beautiful with hills, valleys, rivers, streams, fields and agricultural lands, was once a forest. Even during the period when immoralities such as casteism and casteism prevailed in Kerala, exemplary religious harmony and tolerance prevailed here. Mallappally block panchayat consists of seven Grampanchayats namely Anicadu, Kallooppara, Kaviyoor, Kunnanthanam, Kottanad, Kottangal and Mallappally. The economy was once based on agriculture, but today rubber, a cash crop, dominates. The income of those working abroad and the development of the IT sector have increased trade and employment. There has been growth in industrial sectors. The education sector has been flourishing since the time of foreign missionaries. The block panchayat has been able to provide decisive leadership for the growth in the sectors of health, animal husbandry, dairy production. It has also been able to make great strides in areas such as social security, women empowerment, development of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe areas, poverty alleviation, public works, drinking water and sanitation.

Kunnanthanam, the historical site of Pandavan stories, Kaviyoor, which has been transformed into Kaviyoor, Kallooppara, which calls to mind the glory of the Edappally royals, Kottangal, the center of the Padayani festival, Anikad, which has been transformed into Ayanikad, and Kottanad, which includes the forest area, are the gram panchayats under the jurisdiction of this block.
